Lore & Background

In life, the being known as Undying was a practitioner of forbidden necromantic rituals. His obsession with conquering death eventually consumed him, twisting his body into a rotting husk that can no longer feel pain or humanity. He now wanders the lands of Dota, driven by an insatiable need to animate the dead and expand his dominion over undeath. To him, every corpse is merely raw material for his army. His connection to death allows him to manipulate flesh on a fundamental level. Undying views the living as temporary and fragile, believing that only through decay can true permanence be achieved. He tolerates no resistance, for all things eventually return to him.

In Their Own Story

The battlefield was silent save for the crunch of dry bones against stone. A green mist curled around the ankles of the survivors, smelling of old earth and copper blood. Undying did not walk; he shuffled, his joints popping like dry twigs with every step. He raised a skeletal hand toward the fallen warrior in front of him. The corpse twitched, eyes glowing with unnatural emerald light, before rising to stand at its master's side. "More," the necromancer rasped, the sound like grinding gravel. "Give me more." His gaze fell upon the living enemy retreating into the fog. They thought death was an escape. They did not know that for him, it was only a harvest.

Reader's Guide

Undying serves primarily as a Support hero who excels at sustaining allies and disrupting enemies through necromantic arts. His kit revolves around manipulating corpses and draining life force to fuel his own existence. As a Strength-based champion, he possesses natural durability, allowing him to withstand punishment on the front lines while protecting his team. His passive ability, Decay, slows enemy movement and attack speed upon contact with his rotting aura, making engagements difficult for opponents. He summons Tombstones from fallen enemies or allies, creating a small army of minions that distract foes and deal damage over time. Soul Rip allows him to drain health from nearby units, healing himself while damaging the target, which is crucial for survival in skirmishes. This golem can be sacrificed or controlled to absorb damage and deal area-of-effect harm. Narrative-wise, Undying represents the cost of immortality; he no longer feels pain but exists solely to spread his curse. He is best played in lanes where he can farm minions for Tombstones while harassing enemies with Decay.
